8740 Rod Bolts is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum low-alloy steel which has good strength and good hardenability and toughness properties. It can be used in applications where toughness, strength, and wear resistance are of most essential. It is extensively used as high-strength forged fasteners. It is often found in aerospace applications for aerospace engine parts, aerospace fasteners and aerospace subassemblies. 8740 Chrome Moly Bolts can be forged at a starting temperature of around 2200ºF and can be forged down to roughly 1700ºF. After forging it is best slow cooled, but it can also be shifted to a furnace held at a temperature approximating the temperature of forging finishing and then soaked and air cooled. 8740 steel bolts can be austenitized at around 1525 – 1575ºF and oil or water quenched depending upon section size and complexity. 8740 bolts can be readily machined following suitable heat treatment. And can be welded by normal fusion methods, but prior to tempering and hardening. Pre heat and post heat are suggested.
