High Tensile Bolts contains 0.15 – 0.25% carbon. The carbon content in high tensile steel is 0.60 – 0.80%, Sulphur 0.05%, Manganese 0.60%, Silicon 0.20% and Phosphorus 0.05%. High Tensile Hex Bolt can be treated and quenched to achieve a new hardness, which is stronger than other steels. It has high tensile property which is responsible for steel’s tension resistance, fatigue strengths at certain stress levels and high yield. The properties of High Tensile Nut Bolt are still present even when the material is exposed to elevated temperature levels, which makes it a very versatile and suitable for use in multitude situations. Ht Bolt is also known for its resistance to atmospheric corrosion, the humiliation imposed to materials through exposure to air and air-borne pollutants. And this kind of corrosion is usually found in areas where the electrolytes in water come into contact with the metal, usually in, humid, rainy or snowy conditions.

  • k2 is a coefficient that takes values k2 = 0.63 for High Tensile countersunk bolts or k2 = 0.9 otherwise.
  • fub is the ultimate tensile strength of the HT bolt depending on the bolt class
  • As is the nominal tensile stress area of the High Tensile Bolt.
  • γM2 is the partial safety factor for the resistance of High Tensile Bolt in accordance with EN1993-1-8 §2.2(2) Table 2.1 and the National Annex.
  • The recommended value in EN1993-1-8 is γM2 = 1.25.

Shear strength of bolts

  • αv is a coefficient that takes values αv = 0.6 for ht bolt grades 4.6, 5.6, 8.8 or αv = 0.5 for bolt grades 4.8, 5.8, 6.8 and 10.9. When the shear plane passes through the unthreaded part of the bolt αv = 0.6.
  • fub is the tensile strength of the ht bolt depending on the bolt grade or class
  • A is the appropriate area for shear resistance. When the shear plane passes through the threaded part of the ht bolt A is equal to the tensile stress area of the high tensile bolt As. When the shear plane passes through the unthreaded part of the ht bolt A is equal to the gross cross-sectional area of the bolt Ag.
  • γM2 is the partial safety factor for the resistance of high tensile bolts as per  EN1993-1-8 §2.2.

Difference between high tensile and high strength fasteners

Fasteners are part of everyday life materials. There are bolts, nuts, screws and washers. All of these are applied in different applications and the applications differ in requirements. Two of the most noted properties of the fasteners are the yield strength, generally known as the strength and the ultimate tensile strength, generally known as the tensile strength.

The strength or yield strength is technically interpreted as the maximum stress at which a fastener changes shape permanently. The tensile strength or the ultimate tensile strength is interpreted as the maximum strength at which a fastener breaks off while being pulled apart. These two are important to assess which fastener could be used with which type of applications.

Grades & their strength

There are different grades of metals used in the production of fasteners. They all have different tensile and yield strengths and are used in applications accordingly. The measurement in PSI shows the different capacities of the grades. Grade 2 materials or the low to medium carbon steels have the lowest yield and tensile strengths. Their minimum yield strength is about 57000 PSI and the minimum tensile strength is about 74000 PSI. Some of the highest tensile strengths are seen in the class 10.9 and the 18-8 steels which have up to 150,000 PSI or 1040 MPa. The class 10.9 is the quenched and tempered alloy steels and the 18-8 is the chromium nickel steels having chromium in the range of 17-18% and nickel in 8-13%.

The difference in the material composition makes the steels to have different tensile and yield strengths. One of the highest tensile strengths is seen in tungsten included alloys. The Ferrium M54 is one of the steels with the highest yield strength. It has carbon, chromium, nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, vanadium and tungsten in the composition. It has the yield strength of up to 1731MPa at room temperatures.

As the yield strength and tensile strengths vary with material compositions, their applications vary as well. The high yield strength steels are used in heavy load bearing beams, steel frames and pipe systems. High tensile strength is useful in applications where smaller components need to bear heavier loads. Bolts and nuts, cables, pipes and fasteners of other types need to be minimal in size in some applications, but their strength should be higher. Infrastructure, ship building, transportation, aerospace and in automotive applications are some examples of high strength applications.

There are different grades and specifications of steel which have different tensile and yield strength for use in specific applications. The structural steel grades of S235, S275 and S355 have the yield strengths of 33000PSI, 36000PSI and 50000PSI respectively. Their grade names indicate the yield strength in MPa respectively 235MPa, 275MPa and 335MPa. But their tensile strengths vary to range from 360 to 510MPa in S235 grade, 370 to 530MPa in S275 and 470-630MPa in S355 grade.

The tensile strength of any steel material is the one that should be given full attention as if the application exceeds the tensile strength limits, the components will break, resulting in a catastrophe to the system. Exceeding the yield strength is also bad but is not as damaging as exceeding the tensile strength. Elongation of the material comes into play when using a material with the yield and tensile strengths in mind. While an application exceeds the tensile strength capacity, it gets into the elongation process until it meets the point where the material does not elongate anymore and hits the maximum tensile strength and then breaks. As the elongation value increases, the ability to forming the material also increases. It also means that the material has a range before breaking off since it exceeds a stress above the yield strength capacity.
