A washer is a type of fitting used to distribute the load of a threaded fastener such as a nut or bolt. Usually, they are disk-shaped or sometimes square-shaped with a hole. The application determines the placement of the hole in a washer. It could be centered or off-centered. They are available in various shapes, sizes, and fittings. The most commonly used Washers include plain or flat type, fenders, Belleville washer, wedge, and serrated washers.
Serrated washers are also known as tooth lock washer or star washer. The presence of serrations in such a manner that they extend radially inward or outward the component. Serrations present on the Washer bite into the bearing surface, which is why they tend to be well equipped as a lock type. In particular, during their use in conjunction with a soft substrate, like aluminum or plastic. Another reason for the preference of Star Lock Washers over plain washers is that they resist rotation more than the flat type on hard surfaces. The logic behind this is the presence of some form of tension. Tension, between Washer and the surface, exists over a much smaller area, the teeth. There are four types of star washers: internal, external, combination, as well as countersunk.
The serrations in an Internal Star Lock Washers are present the inner edge of the Washer, which is a feature that makes them more pleasing aesthetically. On the other hand, washers with serrations around the outer edge, are referred to as External washers. They are known to offer better holding power because the External Star Lock Washers has a greater circumference. The combination star lock wash has serrations on both edges, thus exhibiting maximum holding power. The design of a countersunk style star washer is suited for use with flat-head screws.
Tooth or star lock washers work well for ground bonding. Wherein a metal lug or an object gets electrically bonded to a surface. The teeth of the Stainless Steel Star Washer cuts through surface oxides, paints, or any other finish that may be present on its surface to provide a gas-tight conductive path. In an application like this, washers are neither placed under the head of the screw. Nor is their placement under the nut. However, their location is between the surfaces for bonding. In such applications, the serrated Washer does not provide any anti-rotation locking features.
Since star washers need to bear heavy loads, usually their construction makes use of sturdy materials. However, this is not the only factor that decides the appropriateness of the application. Other factors include the type of environment, like if it has highly corrosive media such as acids or chlorides, or if the temperature setting is at a degree of elevation or cryogenic as well as tensile properties. Generally, materials like a duplex, super duplex stainless steel, Hastelloy, Inconel, nickel, stainless steel, etc. are used in the construction of a DIN 6798 Type-A Serrated lock washer. If cost is the main priority, perhaps, making use of a carbon steel washer with a special surface treatment could be an alternative.
